The use of Bristol's tool in lactation counseling and its impact on the breastfeeding status in primiparous mothers undergone Cesarean section

Objectives: Women undergone Cesarean  will face more problems due to their lack of experience with exclusive breastfeeding . The purpose of this study was to use Bristol's tool for lactation counseling on the breastfeeding status in mothers  undergone Cesarean section. Material & Methods: In this interventional study,80 primiparous women after cesarean section were assigned into two groups (40 in each experimental and control).In the intervention group in the first two hours, 2 days, 10 days and one month after delivery, the Bristol Breastfeeding checklist was completed and lactation counseling was given to mothers.  After fourth month of delivery, the two groups were re-examined in the state of exclusive breastfeeding and its frequency. Results: Two groups had no significant differences in demographic variables. The status of exclusive breastfeeding during the fourth months showed a significant difference between the two groups(p = 0/04). There was a significant difference between two groups about the frequency and times of breastfeeding four months after delivery(p = 0.03). The four Bristol instrument items and the mean Bristol tool average score improved significantly during the four breast feeding counseling sessions (p <0.001). Conclusion: Using Bristol's tool, can identify mothers' breast feeding problems and provide appropriate lactation counseling.
